Thank you Courtney for the opportunity to share a collaboration we’re really excited about. I am a part of a community of creators of kids podcasts called Kids Listen and we have all been looking for ways we can help children with the chaos of our world and how unsettling it can be when feelings become so big and overwhelming. One of my favorite podcasts is Peace Out Podcast, mindfulness stories for kids by Chanel Tsang. This episode she did on H.A.L.T. takes a popular parenting strategy (check if you child is Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired) and turns it around so children can use it to self-assess where they’re at.

https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/h-a-l-t/id1195586628?i=1000395571281

As for our podcast, Dorktales Storytime, we believe in teaching (not preaching) through storytelling. So, when we wanted to do an episode about overwhelming feelings, we asked Chanel Tsang from Peace Out Podcast to collaborate with us on our story “Big Bad’s Big Feelings ” where our friends from the Folktale Forest are on an emotional roller coaster, especially the Big Bad wolf. He just wants to howl at the moon. Enter our caring capybara voiced by Chanel who patiently helps them sort through their big feelings and huff and puff their stress away. It’s an original story that helps kids learn how to self-regulate through coping strategies and a mindfulness exercise.

I love that there are so many Nicolas Cage podcasts out there, and the crazy undertaking that Petros Patsilivas did by getting a whole bunch of Cage podcasters on one show to talk about The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent on his Caged In: Coppola Connections was very impressive and entertaining.

It's hard to pick a favorite episode of my own podcast because it depends on the movie being discussed, the guest, and the puzzle pieces we came up with to discuss, but I really felt like we got into some great stuff and what makes the show tick on our recent Top Gun: Maverick episode

A similar focus on art’s healing potential is also found in our own episode of Reframeables where we interview writer Katie Zdybel about the reframing power of fiction: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/reframeables/id1584395240?i=1000558144303

I really enjoy This is the Greatest song I've Ever Heard in My Life - Scott Interrante does a great job hosting this podcast, all the interviews sound like they're conversations between a couple of friends. This episode where he discusses Caroline Polachek's "Door" with Eleri Ward is one of my favorites since they actually talk about some of the complicated music theory behind the song.

https://open.spotify.com/episode/6Y5GjCmZHS7TuqiUVRrBzh?si=b509bcbae5b64d22

My most recent episode is on the soundtrack to the movie, School of Rock. Even though it's a crowd pleasing film, there's a lot of attention paid to the music in the film. My guest is Jon Reilly from the Life's But a Song Podcast and we really get into how musical this movie really is.

Huge fan of "Surely You Can't Be Serious" - great chemistry between the hosts and no one researches pop culture like they do. Their recent episode on the original Top Gun in anticipation of Top Gun: Maverick was incredible.

https://open.spotify.com/episode/3Yo9EITrSvAmV95y6IXOgP?si=63144cf0151349ed

For my podcast - The Okie Bookcast - it's a recent episode I did with comics artist and illustrator, Jerry Bennett. He has an unmatched level of enthusiasm about the work and is an incredible encouragement to other artists. Part of the conversation turned into a master class about process and developing new characters.

My absolute favourite podcast is Black Gals Livin and my favour episode is probably the tales of the blackfish here:

https://open.spotify.com/episode/6aAmNL2JGfC5ZuadewyDju?si=ajLipCX0Qcmvt-N0zcl1Tw

It discussed a topic so close to my heart, blackfishing, and had me laughing out loud when listening!

My podcast is called Juicy conversations with Julie, and my favourite episode is probably my most recent one. Juicy Conversations usually discusses quite serious topics and this was quite a light hearted and super fun convo that mixed social justice and pop culture, two topics I love reading, listening and talking about:

Thank you for putting this playlist together! What a fabulous idea.

I've been a fan of The Greatest Song Ever Sung Poorly for a while now, and my favorite episode of theirs is a fairly recent one. Their guest was one of the hosts of the Beer'd Al podcast (another enjoyable show in its own right), and the discussions surrounded the idea of "finding your weird" in both karaoke (the focus of the podcast) and in life. If you're looking for an introduction to either show, you can't go wrong with this episode.

https://open.spotify.com/episode/2N9M4YAb5x22u4iAT0lSWT?si=y_-7K8FWQk-PSMVAo6Vpmw

As for our own show, "I'm A Sophisticate and So Can You!", we've had a number of episodes that I'm proud of, but our episode covering both the band Arcade Fire and the movie Moonstruck has quickly become a favorite of mine! We weren't expecting to have so many meaningful discussions about nostalgia, age, and the nihilistic beauty of love, but it turns out that there are more parallels between the movie and the musicians than we thought.

This is awesome, thanks Courtney, for facilitating some signal boosting!

We love this new show, It Was Good Actually, that gets after some fan favorite movies that were critically panned and dredges up what was good about them. They talked Ravenous on their first episode (which is good because it's GAY!): https://open.spotify.com/episode/64HqlPQHDTsz6FULrjVEhH?si=VGDx1fliTzSydOxacQofkw

Our show is 24 Flames Per Second, the podcast that roasts the films we love most! We had folks debating the Cats movie a few weeks ago and there's just nothing like someone tripling down on a movie that's about cats/for cats/is a cat (?) and why that's actually great: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/s05e23-cats/id1256228249?i=1000560478755

One of my favourite podcasts of all time is The Feather Heist episode of This American Life. It is just sublime.

Of my own podcasts, I'd recommend the episode in which I talk to my 98-year-old former pirate neighbour, Lou. She has spent her entire life fighting and breaking the law.

https://anchor.fm/remarkablestories/episodes/LOU-e1j02nt

I plan to record a second interview with Lou as this first one barely scratches the surface of a life that has been, by any measure, lived to the fullest. Lou is cranky and contradictory but she is inspirationally sprightly. She was cave diving near my house just a few weeks ago.

Elizabeth Emery's interview with Olympic bobsledder Cynthia Appiah blew me away with the inequality still seen in bobsledding (even though equity is touted a lot by TPTB at the Olympics).

http://www.hearhersports.com/#/ep118-cynthia-appiah-beijing-olympic-bobsleigh/

As for Keep the Flame Alive, our recent interview with Nordic Combined athlete Annika Malacinski really taught us a lot. It's a little bittersweet, as women were just denied the opportunity to compete in the Olympics (again), and that's a goal of Annika's. But we also learned more than we thought was possible about ski jumping suits and how much measurement and fit is a major factor in them being "competition legal."

Nice idea :-)

As for favorites, quirky and interesting podcasts which teach you something, are always favorites. Along that line, I enjoyed a recent episode of Hungry For MO podcast, called "Myth-Busting The St. Louis World's Fair". Was the ice cream cone truly invented there? But what about iced tea? Hamburgers?

https://open.spotify.com/episode/4ZlU8LUFSSZcbHWiLgu1ST

As for my podcast, it's also educational, and interesting, too. I'm a retired plastic surgeon, with lots of knowledge to share, so I started Plastic Surgery Decoded. My goal is to educate the public about plastic surgery in an easy-to-understand way, and to go beyond the hype in the media. My own podcast (I produce it) is Unpacking Peanuts where 3 cartoonists talk about the greatest comic strip of all time-- Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz.

https://pod.link/unpackingpeanuts/episode/0ea6720a9b9574442c4285dd5cc04c1b

Just found you in Arielle's SquadCast email - what a wonderful idea!

My favorite podcast is Maintenance Phase because it's helping me rewire my brain to reject diet culture and weight stigma. It's hard to choose a favorite episode, but I'm going with the one where they do a deep dive into how the Body Mass Index was created and why it has never been a useful measure of anything: https://www.listennotes.com/podcasts/maintenance-phase/the-body-mass-index-Bh_iPpSHIxA/

My podcast is Good Girls Talk About Sex and I interview everyday women* about their sex lives, starting with how and when they discovered masturbation up through present day. It's nearly impossible to choose a favorite episode, but I'm going with "It's A Vagina, Not A Birth Defect" where we hear about the real-world consequences of not having basic sex ed. When Lynn discovered her vagina, she thought she was dying because she wasn't "finished" at the bottom: https://www.goodgirlstalk.com/posts/podcast/its-a-vagina-not-a-birth-defect-lynn/

* Gender is complicated. Interviews feature people who were brought up as little girls, regardless of their correct gender, plus transgender women.

Love that you're doing this! My favorite episode of another podcast would be Sweet Bitter's episode about pirate Grace O'Malley. Such a fascinating piece of history!

https://sweetbitterpodcast.com/2021/12/09/pirates-6/

My favorite episode of my podcast, Historias Unknown, would be the episode on the Battle of Chavez Ravine, when Mexican families were forced out of their homes, for the construction of Dodger Stadium. I love the intro for the episode and though the story is tragic, it was fascinating to learn about the community that was Chavez Ravine.

Love this idea Courtney - thank you!

I want to shout out Imaginary Worlds for the episode on the concept of the multiverse. It's something we talk about a lot on our show, but Eric's came at it from a much more philosophical direction at the top of the show, which was a fun change from how I'm used to thinking about the idea of the multiverse.

A favorite episode of ours right now is Episode 46: Ms. Marvel Predictions. We're in the height of our Ms. Marvel era, so it's a great jumping-off point for keeping up with the current focus of the MCU fandom. Ms. Marvel is a super fun show, so this episode can help any fan (new or seasoned) learn more about the character before catching up on the first few episodes.

1. I love THIS IS UNCOMFORTABLE by MARKETPLACE! I found this story from Laurel Morales' podcast 2 Lives to be very moving. Adopted into an abusive family, Laurel's guest is able at an early age to recognize that what she's experiencing isn't normal and then move away from harmful familial relationships to create a life in which she is able to thrive. I felt inspired to hear that we can not only escape an abusive relationship, but learn to thrive afterwards.

Hey! I’ve been reading through all your posts on here, and I’ve been finding them really insightful, you’ve shared a lot of really useful and actionable tips on how to grow our shows :)

A podcast I’ve really loved recently is Oh No, Ross and Carrie. They are a fun show where they report and debunk fringe science! Hi Courtney, please find my choices below. I love the newsletter. Keep up the excellent work! Charles.

I absolutely love 'The Offensive". It's an audio drama set in the board room of a fictional Premier League football (soccer) club. My podcast is also about football. Specifically it's about Northampton Town FC, the club I have supported since I was very small. During the season my friends Danny, Neil, Chessie and I discuss the plight of our beloved team and champion the great work they do in the community.

Out of season we chat with former players, managers and other people with a connection to the football club. As it's currently that time of year where no real football is being played, I've chosen an interview we did with former player, Ricky Holmes. Please enjoy my podcast, "It's All Cobblers To Me".

For my own podcast, I work on a show called Curious State, which focuses on "nuggets of wonder all around us."
