What We Should Steal From YouTube's Evolutions Keynote
My most valuable lesson from Podcast Movement Evolutions
Hi Besties!
Podcast Movement Evolutions was three months ago, so I’ve had time to reflect and take action on my biggest takeaways.
For starters, the following stats from Mark Pafume’s panel presentation have stayed with me ever since:
To make $50K a year at the average host read CPM, a podcast would need to have between 120K and 170K downloads per month.
According to Pew Research, 88 percent of podcast listeners listed both learning and entertainment as the primary reasons they listen to podcasts.
At a paid acquisition rate of $1 per download, the break-even point occurs when a listener tells three more listeners, who then each tell three more.
As reported by Podnews, 71 percent of podcast listeners discover new shows through recommendations by friends and family members.
Noodling on those numbers leads me to believe that 1) if you want to be a full-time independent podcaster, you’d be wise to incorporate video as part of your monetization strategy, and 2) you want to put your paid acquisition dollars behind your very best content to help trigger the word of mouth machine necessary for cost-effective advertising.
Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about how to add video to your podcast without it taking over your whole life. Today, I’m sharing the ultimate easy button for podcasting on YouTube, set it and forget it style.
The best practical, immediately applicable tip I learned at Podcast Movement Evolutions was to connect my podcasts to their respective YouTube channels via their RSS feeds. This means new audio episodes automatically update on YouTube, which is a godsend for me since I’m not very consistent at posting videos over there. Seriously, it’s incredible—you need to do this now!
Learn how to upload podcasts to YouTube using an RSS feed
You should do this even if you prefer to post video versions of your podcast episodes on YouTube. Of course you can continue to post video content on your channel—that will likely supercharge your growth—but you still need to connect your RSS feed so that YouTube’s algorithm knows it’s a podcast.
Watch YouTube’s keynote if you want the details on why you should do this.
So… ROLL CALL! 🗣
Is your podcast on YouTube? Did you connect it via your RSS feed? Any questions, comments, or advice on the topic?
